But it's not just the broad geographical coverage that makes the TomTom ONE XL special. The user-friendly design also puts it a step above other navigation systems. The crystal-clear multicolor display makes for exceptionally easy viewing of maps, routes, driving directions, and other traveling information, such as mileage and distance. Measuring 4.3 inches, the TFT display offers an expanded widescreen view of brilliant two- and three-dimensional graphics. The device also features 32 MB RAM and 266 MHz CPU, making it responsive and zippy. Using the USB port and the provided cable, you can use your PC to add your own points of interest. Memory expansion is made possible by an SD card slot.
The ONE XL provides clear and accurate turn-by-turn voice instructions, so that you don't have to take your eyes off the road while your vehicle is on the move. Voice instructions are issued at a speed-sensitive volume, so as your vehicle's engine becomes louder or quieter as your speed changes, the volume adjusts itself accordingly, guaranteeing clear and easy listening. I don't have any other GPS experience so I don't have know what other systems do or don't do. This system is easy to use and the computer interface is good so updates and adding things is easy. Battery life is short so plan to plug it in and use up one of those important 12V plugs in your car. It doesn't show average speed on trip and it doesn't seem to have trip synopsis stats although I'm still figuring out some of the functionality. Basic use is quite simple and menus are clear. TomTom XL lasted 9 months. As one number on the serial number had rubbed off and I didn't have my sales slip..... Tom Tom customer service disposed of me even though I had registered on line. DON'T BUY TOM TOM ANYTHING!!!

After trying the Garmin Nuvi 350 and the Magellan Maestro in which I returned both, the Magellan kept shutting off after a few seconds and the Garmin was just to difficult to use. I ordered the TomTom One XL for my son who moved away for college, we needed something easy to use but did the job. The TomTom has worked great and gets him where he needs to go so I don't have to worry so much. And the price was great.

Easy to use, quick to catch the GPS signals when turned on. I drive all over upstate NY (lots of country backroads as well as city streets) and I can't suggest this enough. I have tried several other brands and I like this one head and shoulders above the rest. Worth a try for anyone new to GPS.
