Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: Danny Kaye spoofs Robin Hood and Scaramouche in this inventive slapstick swashbuckler. Portraying the clownish but good-hearted entertainer Hawkins, he infiltrates the court of the corrupt Basil Rathbone (up to his usual brand of cruel villainy) disguised as the legendary king of jesters, Giacomo. After a court sorceress hypnotizes Hawkins into believing he is also a legendary assassin, Hawkins has more identities than he can keep straight, and Kaye zips back and forth between them at, literally, a snap of the fingers. Comic highlights include a wonderful sword fight with Rathbone in which he constantly switches identities, and the classic "chalice from the palace/vessel with pestle" wordplay as Hawkins plays "hide the poison" and forgets where it is. With comely Glynis Johns as his spy-in-arms love interest, Angela Lansbury as the scheming princess, and Mildred Natwick as the dotty spellcaster, this is Danny Kaye at his comic best. --Sean Axmaker

Always loved this movie since I was a kid (before VCR's)and would watch on Dad's old 16 mm projector..Funny that someone else wrote they felt this role was "made for Danny Kaye"....In fact the movie was based on a book- "The Maladjusted Jester" that was written by Sylvia Fine- who was- guess who? Danny Kaye's wife!

The Court Jester is a true classic that will keep you entranced the whole time. Danny Kaye is a top-flight actor and singer. It is sort of a take on Robin Hood , the evil king on the throne and a band of fearless outlaws in the forest loyal to the real king. Except Danny is not the fearless leader but the nurse to the orphaned crown prince, and his only duties are to hold the child and show people the mark on his (the baby's) butt. Sound nasty? it's not.

Is the brew that is true in the chalice from the palace or the flagon with the dragon? You'll never know unless you take the time to enjoy one of the greatest Danny Kaye movies of all time! Also starring Angela Lansbury, Glynis Johns, Basil Rathbone.....does it get any better?

Once again Danny Kaye weaves his very own special type of comedy in a very engaging film. The color, pagentry and the acting are all great. A wonderful film for all of all ages...

I am partial to Danny Kaye, he is one of my all-time favorite actors, but it's not just partiality talking, when I say that this is one of the best comedies ever made! I LOVE IT!!! Thankfully, I was raised watching old movies, and I am making sure that all of my friend's children are made to watch this one, because it starts them on the path to appreciating classic comedy; it's definately Danny Kaye at his best!
