Volume 9 of The West begins with the World Columbian Expedition of 1893, a colossal Chicago fair marking the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the New World, and effectively announcing the closure of the Western frontier. Historian Richard White observes that the closing of the West was marked by romantic idealism regarding the past, masking the real and more complicated history that pointed to the industrial future. That future would begin, in part, with the engineering marvels that would feed distant river water to the parched land of Los Angeles. This financial coup--cagily carried out by Los Angeles officials Fred Eaton and William Mulholland--would require a project comparable in ambition to the Suez and Panama canals.

This final episode of The West also addresses the cultural transition of Mexican Americans who dreamed of a new life in California. But the hour's most moving passage comes from Lakota descendant Albert White Hat, whose impassioned plea--to seek forgiveness for the fate of his people--sets the stage for the closing of the series. Through the stories of Native American descendants and European settlers introduced in Volume 8, the West of the early 20th century is shown to be a land of shared histories. Volume 9 closes with observations by several of the series' noted historians, citing the oft-neglected complexities of the West, with its characteristic history of betrayal and hope. With respect to all the heartbreak and bloodshed that marked the path of westward progress, this remarkable PBS series posits that this singular quality of hope is what defined--and continues to define--the spirit of the West and all of its people. --Jeff Shannon
