Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: Buried like a bone in a snowdrift, Balto never achieved the theatrical success it should have, but it's worth digging up. The film is structured on the true tale of a lead sled dog, Balto, that brought a diphtheria antitoxin to the small town of Nome, Alaska. The film balances comedy, villany, and drama very well and the voice work is above average. Safe family viewing, as even the villain's comeuppance manages a civilized resolution. The only problem is that the film never explains why these events in Alaska inspired New Yorkers to build a statue to the dog in Central Park. Maybe Balto eventually got mugged there. --Keith Simanton

I first saw this movie when I was a kid--probably nine or ten--and I loved it. I just bought it now, at 22, and I have to say it has aged very well. While the sequals (surprisingly) leave one feeling rather cheated, the first movie is excellent. A wonderful family movie it is made even better with wonderful animation, excellent animation (James Horner does not fail to please) and great voice acting. I love this movie and I recommend it to anyone old, young and anywhere in between.

Funny sequences ornament this well told story. There will an implacable enemy Steele, a beauty dog, fierce ... Read More

This is a good cartoon for the family, especially a family that lives in Alaska (which is pretty much the only place this movie was ever a big hit). Some parts are a little too silly, and obviously everything is not very historically accurate, but it has an enjoyable plot and it makes me miss my home state of Alaska, which is why I got the movie in the first place.
I see there are some quality complaints about this DVD. Ummm...this DVD version is the same exact quality that the VHS version ... Read More
